To facilitate adoption of the Solidia Technology process, Solidia Cement is just as affordable and available as Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC). The process leverages the same raw materials, equipment and manufacturing processes that are used by the cement industry today.
OPC is manufactured on massive scales, in large rotary kilns, burning inexpensive, ubiquitous raw materials such as limestone, clay and sand. Over 108 tons per year of OPC is made in 100 plants that are geographically distributed across North America. OPC typically sells for less than US$100/ton, and is rarely transported more than 150 miles by land or 1,500 miles by water.
The Solidia Cement chemistry can be achieved by mixing the same limestone, clay and sand that are used to formulate OPC, albeit in slightly different ratios. These raw materials can be fired in the same kilns to produce a clinker that can be ground in the same mills that are used to make OPC.
Despite the chemical and process similarities between Solidia Cement and OPC, the differences between these two materials are significant. Compared to OPC, the Solidia Cement chemistry requires less limestone and can be fired at lower kiln temperatures. As a result, Solidia Cement can be manufactured while consuming less energy and generating 30% less greenhouse gases and other pollutants than OPC.
